With a little bit of sunshine and warmer temperatures today, these two very early Small Tortoiseshell butterflies seen on the machair made it feel like summer had arrived. A Chiffchaff has been present here in Askernish the past few days and a Green-winged Teal has been seen at the north end of Loch Bee

I found three ( 2 pups and an adult) here on the beach recently and there have been others who have found seals in the dunes. Seems like they are having a bad time of it

There are also decent numbers of Lapland Bunting to be found here on South Uist with 7 today at Frobost and a minimum of 4 at Bornish and a further 12 on Askernish machair yesterday. It looks as if the bill is long, slightly decurved and flattened at the tip in some photographs plus the black "anchors" on the lower scapulars, all good indicators of western, but as Brian says, these are tricky to positively ID.
