Someone told me what this was and then I forgot...

I found this on the shore a couple of years ago, and someone told me what it was (did it begin with a G?). Now a friend has posted something very similar on twitter, and it is more of the same. But can I remember? No I can't. This specimen was washed up on the shore at airport beach in the spring, and apparently it is usually found attached to seaweed, and it is a filter feeder. :?:

Oops, managed to find the answer myself. Is it Grantia compressa? Happy to be corrected

Yes, Grantia compressa, widely distributed around the British coast. A member of the sponge family (Porifera) and, as you correctly note, a filter feeder.

A lovely picture.

You can see a distribution map of the records for this species on the NBN Gateway (http://data.nbn.org.uk/gridMap/gridMap. ... 0000175545).
It may be very common, but we'd still appreciate the details (location and date) for the biological records database. You can send the information to me at records@ohbr.org.uk.
Thank you
