Barra

Post by Bruce » 13 Nov 2016, 19:49

A drake American Wigeon has taken up residence on Barra at Eoligarry. It turned up on 30th October and was still present today on the flooded field next to the road; it occasionally roosts on the rocks off of the jetty. It's usually in close company with a female Eurasian Wigeon. As far as I can tell this appears to be the first record of American Wigeon for Barra.
Waxwings have been a feature of the past few weeks with a maximum daily count of 24 on 4th. 2 juvenile Iceland Gulls have been around Ardveenish and Traigh Mhor during the past week, though I've not seen any Glaucous Gulls yet this season. The usual wintering flock of Brent Geese seem settled at Traigh Mhor, with 66 present today. A Scaup has been at Tangasdale for the past week and a Coot, rarer on Barra, present at the same site for the past fortnight.
On 4th a Little Bunting was at Skallary; the autumn of 2016 has been a good one for this species with at least 3 individuals on Barra.
