Post by virtualheb » 15 Jun 2014, 17:44

Hi all

I have two photos, both of wildflowers - taken today at Scalpay, can ayone help identify please.
The pink - I thought might be a type of vetch??
The purple - maybe a geranium or cranesbill?

Hello Chris,
The first flower is Meadow Cranesbill (Geranium pratense) or one of the cultivars. As this is a common garden flower it is probably a garden escape.
The second is probably Common Vetch (Vicia sativa).

OHBR collate records of plants which are then forwarded to the BSBI. If you would like to send in your records we need a grid reference and a date, full information is available on the OHBR website (http://www.ohbr.org.uk) and all records are appreciated.

Sorry, I'm catching up on this thread a bit late. I suspect the second one is Vicia sepium (bush vetch), as the flowers are more dull purple than Vicia sativa. V. sepium is also commoner in the Outer Hebrides - V. sativa is usually an introduction.
