Hi Paul,
You see those two dots on the back of the thorax ? If there were only two it was probably V.rufa the Red wasp.
A view of its face would help to confirm it.
Did you think that the first abdominal segment (the one nearest the thorax) was reddish ?
That helps but the absence of red does not rule out Red wasp !

I didn't realise wasps were so tricky - obviously I should have caught it. It's the first record of any wasp from our garden & I was going to enter it on OHBR site but I can't if I don't know what it was can I. There doesn't seem to be any red on photo even when enlarged on computer.
