I found this fungus growing in leaf litter in Stornoway Castle Grounds on 20 September. It was a distinctive greyish-lilac in colour. Can anyone suggest an id? Thanks.

Hi Tristan

This is almost certainly Laccaria amethystina, which is common there.

It is useful to have a shot of the gills or pores when trying to identify a fungus from a photograph.

Thanks for the id, Chris, and thanks for the hint about photos.

I see it's got a great English name - Amethyst Deceiver.
