Isle of Lewis moths - May 2016

Post by YvonneB » 03 Jun 2016, 16:52

I spent all of May up in the Isle of Lewis and managed to get the moth trap out at Upper Carloway on the west side, a few times when the weather was reasonable. I had a couple of no catch nights when the weather was clear with a full moon, cool and breezy. Moths trapped - 19 species including Puss Moth, Red Chestnut, Common Wave, Shears and Glaucous Shears, Dusky Brocade, Narrow-winged and Common Pug, Common Quaker plus a few more common species.

New for me in the islands was Scalloped Hazel (Odontopera bidentata) and a micro moth which I believe is Aspilapteryx tringipennella.

It was also good to chat and compare mothing notes with the local RSPB contact Vicky who also has her trap out regularly not far away in Knock, Carloway. I told her about the Outer Hebrides Biological Recording (OHBR) project and how she can also submit her island moth records to them.
Scalloped Hazel
Common Wave (Cabera exanthemata)
